Be Wise Before You Shine: The Hidden Wisdom of Withholding Your Gifts
It’s natural to believe that the quickest way to succeed is by boldly showcasing your talents, skills, and full capabilities. In a fair and straightforward world, that would make perfect sense—impress the right people, get the right opportunities, and rise through the ranks. But the reality is, the world we live in doesn’t always reward brilliance that’s too obvious too soon.
In many environments, showing your talents prematurely can attract the wrong kind of attention—envy, insecurity, and even silent opposition. That’s why it’s important to act with discernment. Before making yourself too visible in a new space, take time to observe. Study the environment. Understand the culture. Learn the dynamics and terrain. Ask yourself:
-
What kind of people am I working with?
-
Who really holds the power here?
-
Is my boss someone who empowers others or someone who feels threatened by strong personalities?
This quiet assessment can help you decide whether to bring your gifts to the forefront or wait patiently until the right opportunity presents itself. Wisdom sometimes means lying low, not out of fear, but out of strategic foresight.
When Gifts Intimidate
Sadly, talent often provokes insecurity in others. People may feel threatened by your capabilities and will go to great lengths to protect their position, influence, or image. They might subtly or openly frustrate you, block your progress, or isolate you to diminish your shine.
We see this dynamic in the story of Joseph. His brothers sought to destroy him out of jealousy. Not everyone will rejoice in your calling or welcome your presence, especially if they feel their light dims next to yours.
Consider the story of King Saul and David. Saul initially allowed David to face Goliath because he didn’t perceive him as a threat. But once David’s victory earned him the admiration of the people, Saul’s attitude changed. He became suspicious, insecure, and eventually hostile because the people’s praise exposed David’s undeniable anointing.
David didn’t need to proclaim his greatness. His actions revealed it, and the people recognized it. When you’re truly gifted or anointed, it won’t go unnoticed. The moment you begin to function in your calling, people will see it. And unfortunately, some will try to stop it.
Be Strategic with Your Shine
Here’s the truth: What God has ordained for your life will surely come to pass. No man, system, or structure can ultimately block divine purpose. However, the journey there requires wisdom. Being too eager to display your talents can bring unnecessary enemies, delays, and resistance. Sometimes, the best strategy is to wait for the right moment to emerge.
This world is not always fair. Talent alone does not guarantee promotion. Often, it’s emotional intelligence, timing, and strategy that make the difference. Don’t let your brilliance burn too fast in an environment that’s not ready or willing to embrace it.
Be wise before you shine. Wait for your moment. And when it comes, your gift will speak louder than anything you could have said or done to announce it.
